Day 15 – Homeward Bound
We woke to another beautiful sunny day, with the wind finally tamed after its blustery performances of late. It was an early breakfast for us, since we had to pack up and say farewell to the Kinsterna Hotel by 11am.
Leaving was bittersweet. We’d truly fallen in love with this magnificent resort, but the road beckoned—and what a road it was! No photos again (I was driving), but honestly the vast coastal views and sweeping mountainscapes were so immense, no camera could have captured them. We had the road practically to ourselves once we left the coast, and the drive was as smooth as it was scenic.
Our plan was to stop at the Corinth Canal for a light lunch before continuing on to Athens airport. Now, the viewing area isn’t exactly picturesque, but the canal itself is jaw-dropping. First dreamed of by the Roman Emperor Nero (who even stuck a golden shovel in the ground to mark the start), it wasn’t actually completed until 1893 under the direction of Hungarian engineers István Türr and Béla Gerster. Carved through solid rock, the canal stretches about 6.4 km long, is 21.4 m wide at its base, and plunges to a depth of 8 m. Ships take around 30 minutes to pass through, with sheer cliffs rising 79 m on either side—an absolute marvel of 19th-century engineering!
As for us? Lunch was less grandiose: Goody’s fast food just across the road. Hardly gourmet, but it did the trick after we watched a brave soul (idiot?) bungee-jump off the bridge into the abyss—madness or bucket-list brilliance, you decide!
From there it was a straightforward drive to Athens airport. We arrived in good time, dropped off the hire car, checked in our bags, and breezed through security. A few Kalamata olives and some Thyme honey purchased 😉, we made our way up to the Aegean lounge on the third floor to wait for our evening flight home.
And so, our Greek adventure draws to a close. Without wanting to toot my own horn too loudly (but, hey, why not?), I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed planning this trip. From itineraries to ferries, hotels to hidden gems, everything came together seamlessly. Day 14 – Last full day!
Woke up to sunshine and yet more wind (seriously, it’s like the last few days we’ve been holidaying inside a giant hairdryer!) and realised this was our final peaceful morning.
Now, what do sensible people do with their last full day in paradise? Dash around frantically ticking off forgotten sights? Nope. We chose the far more professional “top off the tan” and “relax max” approach. Hours by the pool, leisurely strolls around the Kinsterna estate, and the occasional sigh at the thought of returning to reality.
For our last supper we headed back into Monemvasia. Our shuttle bus turned into something straight out of My Big Fat Greek Wedding—locals dressed to the nines. Mystery solved when we stumbled upon a bride, a groom, and what looked like a christening party (though some of the fashion choices were scarier than the wind gusts 🤯). We wished them health, luck, and slightly better shoe choices from a safe distance.
Souvenir shopping? Easy peasy. Yes, pricier than elsewhere, but made much more palatable thanks to wine and honey tastings. (Shopping + alcohol = always a dangerous but satisfying combo!)
Dinner was trickier—the wind was still howling round the rock, turning outdoor dining into an extreme sport. We eventually surrendered to an indoor taverna where he tucked into moussaka and I went for a halloumi salad. Both perfectly portioned, leaving just the right amount of room for a farewell gelato. 🍨
And so, our amazing holiday draws to a close. We really don’t want it to end! Tomorrow we face a circa 4-hour drive back to Athens Airport. I’ve got a few ideas to spice it up—watch this space…

Day 13 – We made it to Monemvasia!
This morning we woke up to our usual glorious sunshine, though the wind, if anything, had strengthened! Breakfast was a blustery affair, with cups, glassware and cruets crashing dramatically to the floor and almost into the pool.
Today was the day we finally made it across the Causeway and up to Monemvasia! We hopped on the shuttle bus (a bargain at €1.25 per person each way) and trundled our way up the hill, not quite sure what awaited us.
A little background: Monemvasia was founded in 583 AD by people fleeing Slavic and Avar raids. Its name means “single entrance” and refers to the narrow causeway connecting it to the mainland. Over the centuries, it was an important Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman stronghold, each leaving their mark on the architecture and fortifications. At its height in the Middle Ages, it was a thriving trading port with thousands of residents. Today, it has around 20 permanent residents inside the old walls, and only about 40% of the historic houses are occupied, the rest being restored as boutique hotels, cafés, and shops.
The stone portal is not particularly grand, but stepping through it is a little like wandering into Dr Who’s TARDIS. Suddenly, you find yourself in a labyrinth of cobbled lanes winding between honey-coloured stone houses, chapels and courtyards. This was the “new” town on the lower level. The “old” town lies much higher, reached by a staircase of shiny, timeworn stones with very few handholds. We gave it a go, but with the wind buffeting us and the steps getting more precarious, we made it to about 80m below the summit before declaring defeat.
Lunch was at the Kanoni restaurant, where I tucked into a beetroot salad with goats cheese panna cotta, while he sampled the local Monemvasia sausage. Both dishes were delicious 😋.
Afterwards, we strolled around the lower town, reaching the eastern wall by the sea. The waves were whipped into a frenzy, crashing against the rocks in a kaleidoscope of blues, greens and whites – completely mesmerising. Hats, meanwhile, were being chased down passageways in every direction! No surprise really: across Greece ferries had been cancelled in droves because of the gales, so we felt rather lucky just to be on dry land, even if it was trying to blow us back to the mainland.
A gelato stop was our afternoon indulgence before the shuttle bus trundled us back across the Causeway. A quick dip back at the hotel set us up for dinner at Athivoli Tavern, where we enjoyed another excellent meal despite the persistent wind.

Day 12 – Nothing Much Happens
We woke to a cloudy, windy day and knew it was going to be a downtime interlude.
We did try to go down to Monemvasia for lunch, but almost got blown off the Causeway as we tried to cross! No photographic evidence of anything today – I was far too busy driving, eating, snoozing, or being subliminally brainwashed by social media.
AccuWeather promises us a better day tomorrow – fingers crossed!
PS – If you don’t know the podcast Nothing Much Happens, imagine being read a bedtime story in which the highlight is stirring a cup of tea twice instead of once. Strangely hypnotic, deeply soporific, and guaranteed to make even a Greek windy day seem eventful.

Day 11 – when plans sink without a trace 😢
We breakfasted early: he headed for his daily pool session while I did laundry. Trust me, nobody needs to see my not-so-smalls flapping in the breeze, so those comedy photos are staying firmly off the internet!
Our grand plan? Pavlopetri – the oldest underwater city in the world. Armed with snorkels, towels, water, and enough anticipation to power a Greek ferry, we set off for Hamokelo beach. The drive itself was spectacular – all dramatic mountains and glittering sea. So stunning, in fact, that we didn’t even bother trying to take photos. Honestly, you’d just accuse me of using a screensaver.
Now, since the beach has no facilities, mission one was to find shade. Cue a detour to Neapoli where, two shops later, we emerged triumphant with a blue-and-white striped parasol. It felt like winning the Olympics of beach prep. 🥳🏖️
Arriving at the beach, we spotted a few snorkellers bobbing about, looking purposeful. Signs read, masks on, flippers ready – off we swam! Out to the buoys, under the waves… and there it was… a reef. A fairly average reef. No streets, no buildings, no ancient city – not even a submerged kebab shop. After 45 minutes of underwater squinting, we gave up, feeling as though we had failed spectacularly in our quest.
Here’s the kicker: Pavlopetri really is extraordinary. Discovered in 1967, it’s over 5,000 years old, with roads, houses, courtyards, and even a cemetery – basically, ancient suburbia. The BBC even made a documentary (City Beneath the Waves, 2011) where clever tech revealed the whole lost city. Sadly, our “documentary” looked more like Two Tourists Lost at Sea.
At least our parasol did its job – guarding our stuff like a faithful soldier and providing a modesty screen as we wriggled out of wet swimwear. It now lives in the boot of our hire car, and since we’ve no idea what to do with it, if anyone’s in Monemvasia next week and wants a nearly-new parasol, DM me!
Lunch at a nearby campsite redeemed the day: Greek salads for both, plus a grilled sausage for him. Simple, tasty, and crucially above water. The drive back was uneventful (unless you count one dramatic photo stop) and dinner at the hotel was quiet – although the Assyrtiko wine deserves a special mention for being dangerously drinkable
Tomorrow we’re off to Monemvasia’s old town – hopefully something we can actually find!

Day 10 – Learning the history of the Kinsterna Hotel
Breakfast was an incredible buffet of home-grown and home-made produce from the estate. It was almost impossible to make a decision – freshly baked breads, their own olive oil, honey from the hives, fruit from the orchards – and this indecision set the tone nicely for the rest of our day!
Poolside relaxation for him, and a guided tour of the mansion and its antiquities for me.
The Kinsterna Hotel is a Byzantine-era rural mansion with an extraordinary past. Its name derives from the ancient stone cistern (kinsterna) at its centre, which once collected spring water to irrigate the fertile terraces around it. Over the centuries the estate passed through Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian ownership, each leaving a mark in its towers, courtyards and vaulted rooms. In its heyday it was famed for wine production, silk weaving and olive oil – Monemvasia’s legendary sweet Malvasia wine was once cultivated here.
By the 20th century the mansion had fallen into ruin, until it was purchased in 2001. After seven years of painstaking restoration, the Kinsterna Hotel finally opened its doors in 2020. Today it boasts 52 elegant rooms and suites, blending historic architecture with contemporary comfort.
The project not only safeguarded the estate’s heritage, but also revived its agricultural traditions: olive oil, wine, soap, honey, bread and preserves are all produced here once more. The vision is nothing short of exceptional – sustainable, historic and luxurious all at once – and it creates an atmosphere that makes you wonder: why would anyone ever want to leave such a beautiful place?
The afternoon unfolded in suitably leisurely style…
Later, we decided to head down to the mainland side of Monemvasia for dinner. With great purpose we set ourselves a mission: find a washing line and some pegs! Hardly the most glamorous of quests, but in fact it turned out to be remarkably straightforward. A small victory, but we’ll take it.
Dinner itself was Italian and delicious at Tartaruga di Mare, accompanied by the gentle sound of waves lapping on the shore.
Our return drive to the hotel was, to my great relief, far less hair-raising than anticipated. The tiny winding road proved to be rather gentle, and before long we were safely back. Time for a celebratory nightcap… pours self a stiff one! 😜

Day 9 – From the islands to the mainland
Today was a travelling day, and after our final waterside breakfast (yes, I know I said that about Aegina already!), we packed up and headed down to meet our water taxi. After three days of watching them dart back and forth from Spetses to Kosta, it was finally our turn. At 40€ one way for a comfortable 8–10 minute trip, it’s a bit pricier than the irregular ferry from the port (4€ per ticket, 20 minutes crossing), but the convenience was worth every cent.
Arriving at Kosta, we had time for a quick, much-needed frappé before being greeted by the charming team from @MPRentals who delivered our almost brand-new automatic Seat Ibiza. Paperwork done, bags stowed, and we were off—road tripping towards Nafplio.
Originally, I’d planned for us to stop for lunch in Nafplio, but after visiting the Palamidi Fortress we decided to push on. Built by the Venetians in the early 18th century, Palamidi crowns a 216-metre hill above the town and is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Greece. With its eight bastions, endless staircases (999 steps if you’re counting!), and sweeping views over the Argolic Gulf, it’s a place that makes you feel small in the grand sweep of history.
Lunch instead was a quick souvlaki stop at Myli Beach, simple but delicious.
Then came one of the most beautiful drives we’ve ever done—winding mountain roads, hairpin bends aplenty, climbing and descending with breathtaking views at every turn. Vast vistas opened out around us, the kind that no photo could ever capture.
And then… 😱 raindrops on the windscreen! Google Maps switched to night mode, and for a moment we thought our holiday might be about to end in a soggy disaster. Thankfully, the storm seemed trapped in the mountains. By the time we descended to the coast and caught our first view of Monemvasia, the sun was shining again, making the stone “rock town” glow golden in the distance.
Our hotel, the gorgeous Kinsterna Hotel, is tucked high up a steep and winding road, though thankfully well signposted. The welcome was warm, the room spacious and stylish, and the entire estate feels like it’s waiting to be explored. With six nights ahead of us here, we already know this is going to be a very special chapter of our trip.
Dinner at the hotel’s taverna was plentiful and delicious—local produce, traditional flavours, all under the stars. Early to bed tonight… tomorrow we explore!

Day 8 – A Lazy Day in Spetses
We were woken at 7am by the sound of canon fire! Not exactly a recommended alarm clock. 😅
At breakfast we watched the Armata sound system being dismantled, the big yachts already slipping away, and a military frigate taking pride of place in the harbour (quite possibly the source of our early morning “boom!”).
A quick wander around the harbour confirmed that Spetses was still buzzing with festival spectators—finding a table with a harbour view was nearly impossible, but after some persistence (and luck!) we managed it. A couple of hours of prime people- and boat-watching passed in no time.
Before the museums closed, we made our way up to the Bouboulina Museum, set in the heroine’s own 17th-century mansion. Laskarina Bouboulina is one of Greece’s great independence figures—an extraordinary woman who became an admiral of the Greek navy during the War of Independence. Her leadership, bravery, and financing of ships made her a legend, and the museum is a treasure trove of her personal belongings, portraits, and stories. Visiting gave us a deeper sense of why Spetses celebrates her so passionately each year during Armata.
Afterwards, we skipped lunch in favour of a sneaky Sunday snooze—seemed to fit the lazy-day mood perfectly.
The afternoon continued at a relaxed pace: pool time for him, and another gentle stroll through town for me. By evening we set out on foot for dinner at the old harbour, a 30-minute walk ending with boat-spotting heaven: big and small, gleaming and decrepit, painted wood and shiny PVC, work boats and leisure yachts. A floating catwalk of maritime life!
Dinner options were less inspiring, so we ended up hopping into a horse-drawn carriage back to the main square. A rather romantic way to return, even if dinner itself was nothing to write home about.
We rounded off the evening by watching a few children’s dance performances on the main stage in the square before calling it a night.
Tomorrow we leave the islands behind and head to the mainland—already missing the buzz, colour, and rhythm of island life.

Day 7 – Armata Day in Spetses 🇬🇷✨
A lazy start with breakfast at the hotel before heading out in search of a prime spot for people (and boat!) watching. First stop: #DapiaPortoCafe – a strong coffee to set us up, followed by avocado toast topped with eggs from local organic Spetses chickens. Honestly, the best we’ve ever had! 🥑🍳
The afternoon was pure magic: 4 hours with Captain Leftheris aboard his beautifully restored boat. As we cruised around the island, he regaled us with tales of heroes, villains, and island legends. Between the stories and the stunning coastline, it quickly became clear Spetses is very much a playground for the fabulously wealthy! 🛥️💎 We didn’t want to disembark – the boat itself was an experience.
Back on shore, it was time to change for the gala dinner and the much-anticipated Armata spectacle. The festival commemorates the 1822 naval battle, when the people of Spetses played a decisive role in defeating the Ottoman fleet during the Greek War of Independence. 🇬🇷⛴️
Words (and photos) don’t really do it justice – you simply have to be here to feel it. But I can say this: it was the most spectacular firework display I’ve ever had the privilege of watching, filling the night sky above the Old Port with light, color, and history. 🎆
What a day. What a night. Spetses, you’ve outdone yourself. 💙

Day 6 – Ferry hopping to Spetses
Farewell Aegina! Bags packed, “wheelie bin” returned safely to its rightful owner (thankfully without scuba gear this time!), it was time for the next leg of our island-hopping adventure.
Our ferry day began with a smooth sailing to Poros, a pretty, pine-covered island sitting just a stone’s throw from the mainland. Life here feels unhurried and local – fishing boats bobbing alongside small yachts, and the hum of scooters in the narrow streets. We tucked into delicious gyros by the waterfront while watching the little water taxis zip constantly across to Galata, linking island and mainland in just a few minutes.
From Poros, we continued in comfortable business class on Hellenic Seaways to Hydra, which could not be more different. Hydra is car-free, with donkeys and water taxis taking their place, and an elegant harbour lined with mansions built by shipowners centuries ago. It feels like stepping into a painting. Coffee gave way to ice cream in the heat, and we sat mesmerised by the scene – yachts of every imaginable size squeezed into the harbour, some so enormous they looked like floating palaces 😱. The island had a distinctly French flavour today too, with plenty of Gallic voices filling the cafés and promenades.
The final hop brought us to Spetses, where hotel staff were waiting at the harbour to whisk away our bags and lead us to the Poseidonion Grand Hotel. That freed us up to walk and breathe in the island’s vibe – polished and cosmopolitan, Spetses feels wealthier and more exclusive than Aegina, Poros or even Hydra, with neoclassical mansions and horse-drawn carriages adding to its charm.
Dinner was simple – pizza and meatballs, washed down with a chilled local rosé – before the evening’s highlight. As part of the Armata Festival, local pop star Giorgos Sabanis took to the stage in the square. Not our usual style of music, but surprisingly enjoyable and the energy of the crowd made it a perfect welcome to Spetses.

Day 5 – Last day in Aegina
Breakfast by the water has become our little ritual and a lovely way to start the day. Then it was pool time for him and work catch-up for me.
Later we headed into Aegina town for pistachio and vape shopping. Parking was a challenge, and when I finally squeezed “wheelie bin” (our rental car!) into a space facing the harbour, I yanked the handbrake and prayed it wouldn’t roll into the sea. For a moment I pictured it needing scuba gear!
The vape shop was an adventure in itself – what we thought would be a simple “I have this, do you have something similar?” turned into a full-blown chemistry lesson, complete with centrifuges. A big thank you to Vape Neptune for their patience, knowledge, and for sending us away bemused but very happy with our purchases.
Buying pistachios was much simpler – three bags later and I’ve got my winter stash of Aegina’s famous salted treats.
For culture we drove up to Palaiochora, Aegina’s old capital founded in the 9th century and once home to 350 churches. Today 35 remain scattered across the hillside. The sign promised a 40-minute hike, but in 35°C we only made it to the first church before retreating for cold drinks in Souvala.
Next stop, the Temple of Aphaia, dating to 500 BC and part of the sacred triangle with the Parthenon and Temple of Poseidon. Its Doric columns still stand proudly over Agia Marina. Afterwards we enjoyed a Greek salad and spicy cheeseballs at Paradise Restaurant before heading back to the hotel for a swim.
Crossing the island is quick – Agia Marina to Perdika takes about 35 minutes – but Google Maps twice sent us down winding lanes through pistachio groves!
The day closed with a sunset swim, dinner in Aegina town (my pistachio pesto pasta was a let-down), and a detour home thanks to a road closure. With some hair-raising backroads navigation, we made it. Now it’s time to pack: tomorrow we sail on to Spetses via Poros and Hydra!

🌞 Day 4 – Discovering Aegina 🌞
The day began with a leisurely breakfast by the sea, serenaded by the lapping waves and chirruping cicadas – the perfect soundtrack to island life.
While my other half soaked up the sun by the saltwater pool, I explored more of our beautiful hotel, the 5* Lalibay Resort & Spa. With just 72 rooms, it feels intimate and peaceful, yet full of charm. It’s adult-friendly (kids from 13+), designed mainly for couples, with fresh modern rooms, stunning gardens, and incredible views. There’s a spa with a long list of pampering options, plus an outdoor gym and tennis court for those who prefer to break a sweat. By day, the beach bar serves light bites, while breakfast and dinner are taken at the lovely Kavos Restaurant. Definitely an hotel to recommend going forward!
By late morning we headed into Aegina Town, just a short 15-minute taxi ride away. Immediately we noticed the difference – mostly Greek tourists, which adds so much to the authentic atmosphere (and keeps the prices very friendly!). Lunch was at a busy harbourside souvlaki spot filled with locals and cooled by fans – a simple, delicious feast.
Practicality won out over virtue this afternoon – our good intentions of hiring e-bikes were quashed by the heat, so we opted for a rental car instead. Let’s just say it was cheap, and the company should be called “rent a wreck”! We’ll see if it survives until Friday morning… 🚗💨
Cultural duty called, so in the comfort of air-con on wheels we went off to visit the Holy Church of Saint Nectarios, an impressive monastery complex. Sadly, much of the interior was covered in scaffolding for renovations, so the dome was hidden, but still worth a visit.
Back at the hotel, we split our paths – a sea swim for him, a pool dip for me – before a fiery sunset painted the sky. Dinner took us to Perdika, just 8 minutes away, where a string of fish tavernas hug the harbour. We chose Remetzo and devoured “lamp” chops (yes, lamp! 😂), fried squid and a fresh tomato salad, under the watchful gaze of four enormous cats hoping for scraps. 🐾
Tomorrow promises more island exploring… and of course, some pistachio shopping!

Day 3 – Athens to Aegina 🌊
Well, the night certainly started with a bang – quite literally! There’s was an earthquake near Athens that created tremors in the city!😱
TBH, I didn’t feel a thing as I was standing in the hotel lobby waiting for a taxi with my friend. My other half, however, was tucked up in bed and thought I’d suddenly launched myself onto the mattress beside him! 😂
This morning came with its own dose of uncertainty thanks to the planned taxi strike across Attica. Would our transfer actually show up? It did – and in style (Lyn Style of course! 😉) A gleaming 8-seater Mercedes van just for the two of us. With no traffic on the roads, we flew to Piraeus and arrived a full 90 minutes early for the ferry.
Cue “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” 🎶 … frappe in my hand, cappuccino in my other half’s, watching ships roll in and out. Boarding brought another little surprise – our seats were in business class! Spacious, quiet, and perfect for a gentle doze as the boat rocked us across the Saronic Gulf.
In what felt like no time at all, Aegina appeared and our second private van whisked us away to the delightful Lalibay Resort & Spa. The welcome was warm with true Greek Filoxenia, and our suite? Not quite presidential, but a gorgeous sea-facing space with two balconies, jacuzzi bath, automatic curtains, and WiFi that actually works!
Lunch at the beach bar, a swim in the Saronic Gulf, another dip in the pool, and then swapping travel tips with some friendly fellow guests filled the afternoon. Work eventually demanded a little attention (no rest for the wicked), before dinner at the hotel’s Kavos Restaurant – waterside tables, delicious food, and a fine bottle of Cretan white rounded off the day beautifully.
An early night for us… Aegina awaits tomorrow!

Day 2 - Athens Adventures
Breakfast on the rooftop of our hotel with its incredible views was the perfect start to our day. From there, we set off to meet a friend for coffee downtown and even ventured into the metro!
Our meeting point was Syntagma Square, where we caught a glimpse of the evzones strutting their stuff. Coffee was served in the stylish Ergon House, where we enjoyed some quality time catching up with our friends.
Refreshed, we strolled through the streets of Plaka, drifting past the Roman Agora, Hadrian’s Library and into the Flea Market – a treasure trove of just about everything you could imagine. After a little shopping success, it was time for lunch with spectacular views of the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the Greek Agora as our backdrop.
By mid-afternoon, the heat was rising, so we headed back to the hotel to cool off and get ready for our evening plans. Getting out of the city proved a challenge, with protests preparing to roll and road closures causing chaos, but we eventually made it to Artemis for dinner at Ouzeri The Widow. Fresh seafood and delicious meze by the sea, all generously paired with ouzo from Mytilini, made it well worth the effort.
Tomorrow we set sail for Aegina – if we can get to the ferry on time, as a 48-hour taxi strike has been announced! Fingers crossed our adventure continues smoothly… 🚕🛥️🇬🇷

Day 1 - Athens
The river shimmered in the moonlight as we crossed this morning, marking the beginning of this long-awaited holiday. An early start saw us board a business class British Airways flight to Athens. Expectations were high, but the experience fell short – a reminder that travel is often full of surprises, not all of them good.
On arrival, the transfer to the Wyndham Grand was seamless, and things quickly took a brighter turn. At check-in, we were handed a key to the Presidential Suite – an unexpected upgrade with sweeping views across Athens. From that moment, the trip began to feel very special.
Friends were waiting, and we made our way to Glyfada for lunch by the sea. Dakos, chilled rosé, the sound of waves, and the Greek sun blazing in a perfect blue sky – that was the moment holiday mode officially clicked in. Hours slipped away as we caught up, laughed, and let the pace of Greece take over.
Later, back at the hotel, a dip in the rooftop pool set the stage for the evening. As the sun dropped below the horizon, the moon rose, and the skies played host to a lunar eclipse. My camera didn’t do the moment justice – the moon glowing beside Lycabettus Hill as the earth’s shadow swallowed it up.
Dinner was in the gardens of the Hill Athens in Thissio, the Acropolis glowing in the background while the moon gave us one last spectacular show. By the time we wandered back through lively streets filled with music, bars, and restaurants, it was still a balmy 22°C at 11pm.
Day one has set the tone. Tomorrow, Athens will reveal even more.
